Genetically Modified Mosquitoes to Reduce Disease Threat

I recall reading several years ago about what I thought was a really ingenious idea - instead of releasing sterile male insects, you release insects genetically modified to have only male offspring. Even if the offspring didn't carry the same mutation, the modeling indicated that the effect would be quite dramatic.

Haven't heard anything about the idea since - too bad. If the Gates Foundation was smart this is the sort of project they would fund.
