I agree that we are from different eras, but please don't mistake that meaning that work today as being less than from past generations. As as baseline, I am a military veteran who has served in a warzone and 100% understand what hard work is. I also completely understand what an authoritarian heirarchy is like. Unlike when I was in the military, however, I prefer to find ways to work smarter rather than harder. Driving all over without knowing if a place is not hiring is not smarter.

Finally, you just said that my behavior is standard with today's generation. So, if it is standard behavior, where is the proble. Most likely the HR person is from MY generation and by your own statement, would be 100% ok with my mode of contact. So, according to you, things work differently today and calling is ok, because that is what today's generation does.

Now that we have that out of the way... while the following is a concern for employers:

the thought of work interfering with someone staying connected to his or her buds is cause for a grievance to be filed. Glad I am no longer having to deal with this new set of rules.

on the other side of that, texting... cell phones... smart phones all make people work much more in some respects. Sure, I get texts at work from friends.... and my company actually encourages us to use our business cell as a personal also. While I get to do some play stuff on there, I also get work texts, work emails and potentially work phone calls all night long... every night. Today's generation is more and more on call ALL the time. We get an awesome phone that is literally an office attached to my body. I am going to HI in a few weeks and I get to bring my office with me! So, even though I get the same vacation as 20 years ago, I get to bring my office.

My company provided phone also serves as my alarm clock. The first thing I do when I wake up is turn off my alarm and check my email. The last thing I do is check my alarm to make sure it is set and my email to make sure there isn't a fire to put out.

My office is ALWAYS nearby... my laptop is usually in close proximaty and if not... my smartphone is leashed on my side. The days when having the luxury of separating work from homelife. Not to mention some of the further socioeconomic things that we could really compare in "your generation" vs mine.... and there are plenty of comparisons where I could argue that your generation had the advantage. (I am not complaining for myself here... I am lucky and grateful for my station in life. I like where I am at and what I have).

You seem to discount today's employees, but I tend to think I wish we could go back to the simple, easy days when you were not expected to have you work phone on you 24/7. The days when you could just drive home and your boss couldn't find you. Back when average single family wage would buy a house, car, healthcare.... back when your generation was setting the groundworks for today's financial fubar.

Really though, you had your challenges and we have ours today. You worries about rotary dials and driving around needlessly, we worry about finding a job. ;)

I do enjoy this discussion.
