degas, lisa, paozel: It does seem like the power and the heat are likely suspects, yet the PowerBook is on the same power and it runs more hot than the iMac and it's also on all the time and never has had any catastrophes in regard to the HD being destroyed. Of course it must be something to do with the iMac G5 architecture. I used to have a UPS and when it exploded I got a replacement and when that one exploded I decided I was better off without it. I do keep both Macs on all the time and they are both hotties. Still, I don't like discomfort and I do use the A/C fairly freely.

I'd replace it with a G5 PowerMac on the theory it's better protected from heat and whatever it is that is destroying my iMacs but I priced it out at over 6K what with tax and two internal HDs and a 23" display and a fast display board, and so forth. That's a very expensive upgrade, even if I get back 1K or 1.5K for the iMac. Ouchie. Not the right time for me to do that kind of thing.

I'm still desolate. Disk Warrior is till trying but seems to be making no progress. I'm eager to try to back up the material from the HD if it's still accessible. Very sad, very sad.
