Have you never noticed that when the medical profession wants to find out whether something is effective or not they do controlled studies (often "double blinded"). You might well benefit from looking those terms up (and the term "anecdotal" in addition!) and take that knowledge into consideration when deciding what significance to attach to your limited personal experience with sutures (and other medical issues as well).

Many things are considered highly important in medicine, not because they occur in every case, but because, even if rare, when they DO occur the consequences are very serious.

"Septic shock" and "anaphylaxis" come to mind.

There are innumerable other examples (in fact one or more for just about any condition you could name!)
