Work likely to start this fall on 16-acre site in Howardsville.
The tailings ponds at the Pride of the West Mill will soon disappear. Work is expected to start this fall and through next year to reclaim the ponds.
The tailings ponds adjacent to the Pride of the West Mill will soon be a thing of the past.
Colorado Goldfields Inc., the current owner of the mill, plans to reclaim the ponds, covering them with some 87,300 cubic yards of fill, 17,900 cubic yards of growth media, along with 8,640 cubic yards of rip rap rock along the Animas River to make sure the river doesn’t cut into the area.
The company has already gotten permission from the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety for the project. Last week the San Juan County Board of Commissioners approved a land-use permit for the project. Commissioner Terry Rhoades abstained since he is likely to be working on the project with Maisel Excavating.
