"Many people in the high tech materials industry have been very eager to be able to get spider silk for bullet proof vests and similar applications and I'm quite sure they are very well aware of the qualities of both Kevlar and spider silk. If spider silk is not better, why do they want it?

im sure they are willing to test it to see if spider silk would be a suitable replacement...i doubt that they have made that determination as yet...there are many considerations...

cost would be one..especially in these economic times..kevlar stops bullets as it is now..it appears likely that the wearer of body armour might be a bit more comfortable in a vest made of spider silk...but are the fed gov, state and municipalities willing to pay extra for that additional comfort?......perhaps yes if it could be shown to improve the performance of the wearer...
lots of considerations..
im sure body armour companies are very interested in spider silk...that doesnt mean that spider silk use is a done deal..even if it is better..

"And why have so many companies been trying so hard to make it?"

because spider silk may have other uses even if its not used specifically for body armour......thats why...
