I guess that is where I struggle with this though.....

This isn't like you're investing into a mutual fund or something, where you can see the portfolio.

You are essentially trading your $$ for shares and the money isn't being used to develop or support a product, but rather to invest in other entities that you have no control over or sight of.

Wouldn't you rather just invest in a company of your choice directly? Or in a company with a proven track record of successful investing?
