Military to unveil new cybersecurity strategy today

August 4, 2011.

The U.S Department of Defense was set today to release a new cybersecurity strategy. And while the most dramatic actions aim at defending tactically against hackers, criminals, and nations, the strategy document will warn that theft of intellectual property is the "most pervasive cyber threat."

According to the Navy Times, the Pentagon will be calling for "more significant efforts to ensure the integrity of the supply chain, so that new software doesn't arrive with vulnerabilities that allow hackers to infiltrate."

At the time of this writing, the document has not been yet officially released.

We shall see what the public and media response will be. But inevitably one can predict that the drama is in the defense and retaliation against attacks that could render U.S. weapons systems and communications sysem inoperable. that is understandable.

But in stressing supply chain defense, and infiltration of defective or sabotaged software, the DoD is correctly targeting the only real defense...stopping cyberattacks before they happen.

This is very similar to approach being taken by the DoD together with Applied DNA Sciences and several major chip manufacturers, who are marking chips with DNA to ensure their integrity throughout the supply chain.

The NavyTimes goes on to say that "the Defense Department lays out its vulnerabilities to attack from both outside and within its own workforce. Formally declaring cyberspace a new warfare domain, much like air, land and sea, the new strategy stresses the need for the military to continue to operate if its computer systems are attacked and degraded"
