Tory senator prepares to run for fed seat

MONTREAL - Conservative Senator Larry Smith, a potential future Tory star candidate and cabinet minister, is holding an exclusive political fundraiser at the prestigious Mount Stephen Club later this month to raise $40,000 for his bid to win a seat in Parliament.

Smith, former president of the Montreal Alouettes football team and former commissioner of the Canadian Football League, announced his plans to seek the Tory nomination in the Montreal-area Lac-Saint-Louis riding in the next federal election after Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed him to the Senate in December.

He is holding a $1,000-a-plate dinner at the reputed Montreal business club on Thursday, March 31.

A Montreal investor relations consulting firm Hilbroy Advisory Inc., and its president, Jean-Francois Amyot, are organizing the dinner, according to documents obtained by the QMI Agency.

"Everybody knows there are elections in the air. There is political advertising everywhere every five minutes. There will be a budget soon and if the government is defeated, there will be elections and Mr. Smith wants to be ready," Amyot told QMI Agency.
