WorldGate Communications premiered its Ojo Shadow on Friday on the Home Shopping Network. The video phone operates over a broadband connection without the use of a PC.

The Shadow, which resembles a cobra ready to strike, has a screen with built-in video camera that sits on top of a narrow, rectangular keypad on a triangular base. The device costs $300, plus a monthly service fee that starts at $9.95 a month.

In getting HSN to debut the new product, WorldGate has tapped into the fourth-largest cable TV network that reaches 89 million U.S. households. Other electronic companies selling through HSN include Kodak and Gateway.

The all-black Shadow is advertised to work as easily as a regular phone and uses existing household phone numbers. The LCD screen stands about eye level to a person sitting down and includes a speakerphone for voice communications. The phone transmits video at 30 frames per second, which is fast enough for decent picture delivery, assuming there are no network problems.
