How do leaks occur? Lets say something comes out in the next few days, and it is determined that the report is excellent. Then how are these insiders getting this info before?

I thought it was illegal but it seems that before anything good or bad happens people know. I thought this was not allowed so how are people doing this? Any feedback for this novice would be great so I can understand.
