short selling explained

IN my short experience daytrading, I still dont understand well "short selling" and how it manages to lower or manipulate the SP. And this stock (as well as many small caps I own) seem to be highly influenced by this.

Anyone care to make a 1 - 2 paragraph explanation? Thanks!!
