Samsung’s 256Mb GDDR3 is also fixed at 4. I guess that must be the JEDEC spec. 256 Mb fixed and 512Mb programmable to 4 or 8.

That sounds a likely explanation. I don't have that JEDEC spec, guess one has to pay for itwink

I still find it pretty useless, but I remember that AMD very much wanted the two values (but in DDR2, I believe). If one needs a burst of 12 what do yuo think the programmer does? Program one burst of 8 and one of 4? I don't think so, he will program three of 4. So we don't need the longer bursts, it does not add anything useful (that I can see)
