US renewable energy overtakes nuclear for the first time

4 July 2011

Renewable energy production in the US is now larger than nuclear and closing in on oil according to the US Energy Information Association.

In the first quarter of 2011 renewable energy sources provided 11.73 per cent of the country’s energy production, 5.65 per cent greater than the quantity produced by nuclear plants. Energy from renewable sources in the US is now 77 per cent the size of domestic crude oil production.

Generation from renewable sources was up 15 per cent compared with the same period in 2010 and by a quarter when comparing to the same period in 2009.

Biomass and biofuels accounted for 48 per cent of renewable production, hydropower 35 per cent, wind almost 13 per cent, geothermal two per cent and solar slightly more than one per cent.

In terms of production, renewable electrical output increased by 25.8 per cent compared with the first three months of 2010. The most significant increases were solar-generated electricity which increased by 104.8 per cent and hydropower output which expanded by 28.7 per cent. The only source to drop was biomass, which fell by 4.8 per cent.
