Shorters bank on the fact that a trader will jump out of a position the minute it turns negative. They short to them and drop the bid ask to buy back the shares at a lower price.

I love buying the "phantom shares" because I have all the time in the world. Shorter's will have to buy my shares back at a much later date and a much higher price. The smart thing for them would be to cover what they have already shorted and move on to another stock.
