Turtles were the cause of flight delays at JFK Airport in New York City on Wednesday morning, according to local media reports.
The small diamondback terrapins were spotted wandering—slowly, as usual—on Runway 4L at around 9 a.m., according to ABC 7 television.
JetBlue airlines was affected by the delay. “Running over turtles is not healthy for them nor is it good for our tires,” said a posting on one of JetBlue’s Twitter accounts.
The New York Post notes that turtles wandering on JFK tarmacs is a yearly event as it's in the middle of their spawning season. The females wander out of Jamaica Bay—situated right next to JFK Airport—and search for places to lay their eggs.
The sandy area behind Runway 4L is an ideal location to lay turtle eggs. “It is a naturally provided turtle maternity ward. When your airport is virtually surrounded by water, your neighbors sometimes come in the hard shell variety,” Port Authority spokesperson John Kelly told the newspaper.
