Colt, I am a bigtime fan of .22 rimfires. My first rifle was a Christmas present in 1954. It was a Stevens Model 84D, bolt action clip feed .22. It has had thousands upon thousands of rounds through it, and it is still a tack driver. It is my favorite squirrel rifle to this day.

Last year, I finally admitted that I was a lousy offhand shot, so I undertook to become a better one. To this end, I constructed a swinging target set made from plate steel 3inch squares suspended from a cable with a safe background behind it. I then went to Dick's Sporting Goods who were having a sale on .22 longrifle ammo (I think it was $5.95 a brick of 500) and bought 4 bricks. I shot them all at 25-40 yards at my range, and in over 2000 rounds, I can now hit the swinging targets more than 9 out of 10 times, and usually hit all 10.
I have to say this was probably the most enjoyable self-improvement project I have ever undertaken. I think I am now a much better shot offhand than when I started.

At present, I have one .22 mag (Marlin 883), one old Remington model 34 bolt w/ tubular mag., one old Marlin 39A lever action, and a Marlin semiauto Model 60 as well as two semiauto .22 handguns. My next project is to be able to hit the swinging targets with my Colt semiauto handgun at least 8 out of 10 at 30 yards. My son in law bought me a brick for Christmas, so I can start as soon as hunting season is over (Is hunting season ever really over?).
