I think that could be called a lukewarm response. Don’t movies, especially limited release movies, especially documentaries, need word of mouth to succeed? Wouldn’t it have to be better than “pretty good” to hit $5 million?

This is Eric at the SHM concerning Winter’s Bone:

So we’re sitting here saying, “OK, you know what, that could have been us and we thought because there weren’t stars that it was not a smart move to do.” But the reality is if you have a good movie and you put it in the right theatre, you’ll start to create some buzz, you’ll start to create some word of mouth and then you can expand, or stop if necessary, before you go to DVD and Blu-ray. And that’s kind of what we’re going to be talking to you about for 2011.

My main fear on this movie was that the delay in the U.S. release, and – let’s face it – the reason HH was able to get it, was because it really isn’t that good. Maybe some of the young "VIP's" at the premiere were more impressed. I hope so.
