Not sure why there should ever be a problem with safety deposit boxes....I have had at least one for over 40 years and currently have 4 at different banks....at no time in all those years has a bank employee ever got thier hands on one of my keys....I always place my key in the slot and turn it and the the bank employee places thier master key in the second slot and opens the box at which time I can remove my key....the procedure is the same to lock the box....never has a key ever left my possession.....I do know that if someone abandons a box and keeps the key, the bank has to drill the lock and replace it with a new one prior to renting it again because I have been in there when they were doing it and I asked about all the securety concerns at that time many years ago.....it would be very easy for a bank employee to wax mold a key if they had it in thier possesion even for a few seconds...wax can be in the palm of the hand and you would never know it happened.....the solution...never let the key leave your possession
