UANGZHOU, Dec 29, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Fan Shaorun, a former head of
the Bank of China branch in Zhanjiang in south China's Guangdong Province, was
sentenced to life imprisonment Saturday.
He was deprived of political rights for life, fined 150,000 yuan (18,138 US
dollars) and his personal property worth 200,000 yuan (24,184 US dollars) was
confiscated by the municipal court of Zhanjiang at the first trial.
Fan was found guilty of stealing 650,000 Hong Kong dollars from the bank,
misusing 32.1 million yuan and granting illegal loans of 109.5 million yuan and
37.44 million US dollars when he managed the Bank of China branch in Zhanjiang
from August 1993 to June 1997.
The court confirmed he was also responsible for losses to the bank of 4.85
million US dollars and 7.1 million yuan from the illegal issuing of banking
notes.
He was also unable to clarify the source of 1.22 million yuan, 210,000 Hong Kong
dollars and 10,920 US dollars in his personal possession. The money was also
confiscated.
