I personally have found that "every man for himself" claim to be very, very untrue. The help, advice, and direction I've gotten on these boards have been absolutely invaluable. People have been way nicer to me than they would ever have to be, and I'm surprised by it every time. There really are good people here! I don't feel like I'm alone in this at all. Not at all!
