Kathlyn Antionette McDonald Philips The Huntsville Item Thu May 19, 2011, 11:10 PM CDT

HUNTSVILLE — Kathlyn Antionette McDonald Philips was born July 2, 1923, in Midlothian, the fifth of eight children of John Douglas McDonald Jr. and Jewell Kathlyn Prince.

Her mother raised the family during the depression era in Dallas and Houston. Kathlyn helped by working at the Prince’s Hamburger stand in Houston, where she met Malcolm H. Philips, a young policeman. On Aug. 27, 1940, at age 17 she married Malcolm and during 52 years of marriage, they saw the world together – enjoying God's gift of life to the fullest.

They competed in horse shows in Japan, snorkeled the waters of Guam, skied the mountains of Alaska, sailed throughout the Caribbean, golfed and water skied throughout the United States, and saw the sights of the world together. Everywhere they went they became involved with the surrounding community, leading Boy and Girl Scout troops, teaching Sunday School, coaching youth sports teams, working with youth groups, organizing adult activities and serving in various leadership roles in numerous formal social and civic organizations. At the bottom of their lives of service together was their strong and abiding faith in God.

During their life-long adventures, they had three children (Nancy White, Malcolm Philips Jr. and Diane Jenkins), eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Malcolm went to be with the Lord in 1992 and on May 12, 2011, at the age of 87, Kathlyn joined him.

Kathlyn led a life of service to her Lord, Jesus Christ, and was a devoted mother and wife, who put God, her husband and children before herself.

Funeral services are scheduled for May 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of Angels at Forest Park Lawndale in Houston, with a preceding viewing.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to The Malcolm and Kathlyn Philips Scholarship Fund (established in 1995) at the First Baptist Church of Huntsville, 1229 Avenue J, Huntsville, Texas 77340-4698.
