Didn`t Broadcom buy Z-Ray, who makes a "bolt-on" WCDMA "spinner chip"? Z-Ray hadn`t yet obtained a QCOM license, and this lawsuit seems to me to suggest QCOM wasn`t giving Broadcom`s patent portfolio sufficient value for cross-license purposes, to satisfy BRCM, and that negotiations with Qualcomm had reached an impasse. Needing that license to enter the merchant chipset market for WCDMA basebands, BRCM had to go ballistic to move the matter towards settlement.QCOM was happy to play hardball, stalling the process, to keep BRCM from competitive design wins.Ultimately, there will be a settlement of BRCM`s claims, and the QCOM counterclaims and/or ancillary litigation which are certain to follow, resulting in mutual licenses. QCOM won`t create another non-royalty bearing TI deal, under any circumstances, IMHO.
