I will give you my WMT retail story. I visited local store yesterday at noon time with still 2-3 inches of snow on ground. Maye a little early to judge retail shopping frenzy but I did only have to knock down one old lady in the trip <g>.
They had about 6 isles of Christmas stuff. Candy lights gift wrap etc. Noticeable absent being sold out were glass ornaments usually made in Carolina area.

Bought some "fancy high faluting" light sets from $2 to $4 and a 1 lb. bag of Hersey's Christmas chocolates for $1.45. I found some basic casual pants for $15 but noticed that clothes shelves had big run on them and many sizes were sold out just leaving for basic fat ass sizes left behind.

Electronics isle was fairly empty with just a few TV's and DVD players still stacked in center isle.
By and large, WMT did well IMO.

I will have take quick look at Sears and Target to see if similar runs on Christmas inventory espically clothes have occurred or my WMT observation is isolated event and retail sucked bigtime.
