On the other hand, without Varney they wouldn't have biochem wizard Les Street onboard, and wouldn't have all the new low and high impact compounds (including CX-1739). Without those new compounds, Cortex would have been washed up years ago.

Stoll said that when CX-717 ran into the artifact problem, they only had ONE potentially viable compound (CX-701) available to bring forward, and that compound turned out to have some shortcomings. It was Les Street who quickly created all the new low and high impacts, building upon Dr. Rogers' previous work.

Perhaps when the post-mortem is written on Cortex it can be used as a case study in business schools to demonstrate the role of Murphy's Law. When you boil it down, it was the artifact that did in Cortex, not bad management. In hindsight, management could have made some better decisions, but the artifact was the torpedo that sunk the ship.
