Tim,
I believe that some of the filters may have become clogged during shipping.
If you blow into the hole on the side you will see that the device is very sensitive.
It will work every time.
I was having the same problem so I took a guitar string and ran a couple more
passageways through the filter. It worked every time after that.
I used an A string to tune it LOL

This is most likely a start up problem that will or has been taken care of.

I'm still using mine I ordered enough to last me until my next order arrives.
