MANILA, Philippines - China on Thursday denied accusations its naval vessels have intruded into Philippine territory, and said the ship in question was a marine research ship engaged in studying the South China Sea.

“China holds a clear and consistent position on the South China Sea issue. The reported ‘incursion of Chinese ships’ is not true. It’s only China’s marine research ship conducting normal maritime research activities on the South China Sea,” the Chinese embassy said in a short statement issued a day after the Department of Foreign Affairs announced that it has summoned its top diplomat.

The DFA statement was released Wednesday, a day after it summoned the Chinese embassy’s charge d’affaires Bai Tian over the reported incursions of Chinese warships beyond the disputed Spratly Islands and well into Philippine territory between May 21 and 24.

China was reminded that the reported unloading of building materials, the erection of posts, and the placement of buoys on the breaker of the Iroquois (Amy Douglas) Bank is a violation of the 2002 ASEAN-China Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.

Iroquois (Amy Douglas) Bank, which is located southwest of Recto (Reed) Bank and east of Patag (Flat) Island, is within the Philippines’ 200 nautical miles Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the DFA pointed out.

“The posts and buoy placed by the Chinese at the vicinity of Iroquois Bank are about 26 nautical miles east of Patag Island and 125 nautical miles from mainland Palawan,” the DFA said in its June 1 press statement.

Citing military reports, the DFA said the monitored ships included a China Marine Surveillance (CMS) vessel and other People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) ships.
