Tim they should work without covering the holes.
I did have 10 good filters that tasted great, and worked perfectly.
I also have many of them that don't work, and I can taste a musky taste.
I'm thinking that some of them may have been stored in a warehouse, and went bad over time.

I hope the fresh batch are fresh off the machines, and work like the 10 good filters that I had the first day.
