SACKETS HARBOR — Thomas W. Scozzafava, owner of the Sackets Harbor Brew Pub, 213 W. Main St., was assaulted early Thursday in front of numerous witnesses at his place of business here.
"It was by four or five individuals," Mr. Scozzafava, 42, said Friday afternoon. "It was a lure and ambush situation."
While declining to elaborate, he said his assault involved "a son of a former employee who was let go."
Village Police Chief Richard G. Coseo said the investigation is revealing that Mr. Scozzafava "may have said something about a family member," sparking the attack. The fight developed in the bar area about 12:30 a.m., and "spilled out the front door and onto the ramp," he said.

The Brew Pub had "quite a crowd" at the time, he said.
Village and Jefferson County sheriff's patrols responded, and initially there were two suspects, Chief Coseo said. With statements being taken Thursday and Friday from those two people as well as five witnesses, he said, the number of alleged assailants has grown.
No arrests had been made Friday.
Mr. Scozzafava had a cut over his left eye, Chief Coseo said. Sackets Harbor ambulance responded, but the victim declined treatment at the scene, he said.
"I was in the hospital the better half of the day" Thursday, Mr. Scozzafava said. "They stomped on my head, so I was being given a lot of tests for a concussion and other stuff."
He declined further comment until he consults his lawyer.
