It would be nice if a big contract for the rebreathers came into play, whether with the Navy (seals) or with the oil/mining industry.
How much they cost will be the determining factor for scuba. Rebreathers have been around for more than 30 yrs, they have just not been cheap enough to attract the weekend diver. Heck they were too expensive for most industries, hard hat diving (surface supplied) is more cost effecient, especially on deep dives with mixed gas.
Military used them because of the stealth of no bubbles.
