I am in the offshore business and I see meters in all kinds of places. They do not have to be near the wellhead, sometimes it is more economical to do so.
Sub-sea wells like "Macondo" may have metering facilities 100 miles or more away. It just depends on where the flowline is going to (above water) and if the flow has to be metered before it is commingled with the flow from other wells (owners)so that each owner is paid the proper amount.
