Why argue the point of the counters? The PR did not say how he determined the numbers. So I would consider a hit a hit period. So that means the page was loaded 1.5 million times as worst case scenerio. Best case scenerio is that 1.5 million unique IP's hit the page. Even knowing that will not tell you how many unique individuals hit the page. So even under best case scenerio your still assuming that 1. No one has access from multiple machines or 2) More than one person is sharing connection. So the numbers can be wrong both ways.
So now on to the silly debate on counters.
First off the counters do not have to be in the visable code. I have not looked at the site but doubt they are using a Hosted counter. As a business they would more than likely be using a log analyzer versus any Hosted or stand alone counter. This gives them the ability to track every object on the site and would give more detail than counters. Even then if they are using a hosted or stand alone counter the majority ignore the Head request which is basically sent when a browser wants to see if new information is availabe. Also, don't forget most pages give you a cookie to determine if you have been there before and when. There are a lot of pages that use that method and only count you once per day.
With the log analyzer you can determine Unique IP's,Unique Ip's for a day, week, month. So they can get detailed information on exactly what is going on.
So in closing take 1.5 million hits to mean 1.5 million hits. No matter how you look at it the fact is still good news.
