I find it very surprising that any CPA firm would be discussing the status of their client's audit with a total stranger. Divulging such confidential client information would definitely be considered a breach of professional ethics, especially something as detrimental as the information that you related. The client in such a case would likely have grounds for referring this breach of confidential client information to the applicable State Board of CPAs. Finally, your claim that the audit will take "at least another 2-3 months" also seems highly questionable, since an audit typically would not take anywhere near that amount of time, based on when the firm was originally retained.
