Could someone explain neomedia patents relation to semacodes?

I understand that Neomedia's patents extend to 1D and 2D barcodes as well as RFID and now GPS. But barcodes of some sort are going to be the first big deal. What is stopping microsoft from implementing a system that utilizes semacodes. Appreciate any inight from past discussions.
