Publishing in the Wahington Post, Jonathan Kay, author of “Among the Truthers: A Journey Through America’s Growing Conspiracist Underground,” narrowed birthers and conspiracy theorists down to a taxonomy of five types. [ http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/inside-the-minds-of-the-birthers-and-other-conspiracy-theorists/2011/04/27/AFhWriEF_story.html ]

"What distinguishes them from the rest of us isn’t a big bankroll or a particular political persuasion — it’s a twisted relationship with reality." says Kay. "Conspiracy theorists retreat into fantasy worlds, bending fact and history to meet their psychological needs and emotional motivations."

2. Failed Historians

These folks are continuously rewriting and reinterpreting history as it happens through a narrow lens of bad guys vs. good guys. They are under constant assault from reality and are driven to develop a "revised" historical narrative.

All ideologues — from Marxists to tea party activists, Islamists to radical Zionists — shoehorn history into preconceived templates, developing triumphalist story lines that will eventually lead to the victory of a chosen group and the vanquishing of an enemy. When history doesn’t cooperate, explanations become necessary. For Failed Historians, conspiracy theories supply those explanations.

Of Course there are other varieties, he has categorized FIVE traits of what he calls "fake believers". He has done this by actually 'being' with them AND spending time with them.

Now, as many of us know..Robert Fisk is a respected writer ..throughout the world. In my opinion, in this case, he is just simply wrong .. And what he is actually doing is Speculating.. He has not ONE FACT that he can produce ..NOT ONE. I must say he is not even close to being the top in this category ... There are others who make a living from this type of stuff .. . .and then there are those who believe them AND repeat them .. over and over again.. always waiting on the next 'conspiracy'. They never seem to realize that they have marginalized themselves .. I mean any sound minded person can accept and evaluate 'some ' conspiracies ... but when It's ALL you stand for and ALL you write about ... you're just not relevant anymore .. Robert Fisk does NOT come in that category . . not one bit .. so I will overlook this lapse of his this time ..
