Applied Materials buys Varian for $4.9B

Applied Materials has agreed to pay $4.9 billion for Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates.
Applied Materials Inc. said Wednesday that it has agreed to acquire Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates Inc. for about $4.9 billion in cash.
Semiconductor equipment maker Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) of Santa Clara agreed to pay $63 a share for Gloucester, Mass.-based Varian, which is a 55 percent premium on Varian's (NASDAQ:VSEA) Tuesday closing price of $40.55.
