I'm thinking that since most energy companies own oil wells they can't carry the entire well as an inventory asset (or boy they would look rich) so most "inventory" isn't on the balance sheet which is why investors have to look for the value of the "reserves" which is off balance sheet.

Probably the same with JBII. The random energy company I looked at is Saratoga Resources. $55 million in sales last year. Zero inventory always.

Many energy companies probably have to do their financials in the same manner a service company does. Perhaps since they are considered "producers" of energy they don't carry an inventory for their "production" -- I really don't know. But I do know that Saratoga produced and sold $55 million worth of energy last year yet never had a single penny on their inventory list.
