Beats me, but apparently ShareBuilder can do it. People transfer shares from one brokerage to another all the time.

It is, of course, also possible that they just want to get that shareholder out of their hair. His comments on Facebook suggest that he's been bugging them quite a bit.

Also from Facebook: people who wrote to Scottrade were evidently told that they'd get a letter answering their questions. It would arrive in 7-10 days, by snail mail. Now THAT is the kind of response I'd expect from an online brokerage.

And: others who contacted Etrade were apparently told there's no short position. Conflicting answers come as no surprise.
