Need To Wait A While For 2006 Tax Year

"I need to get my position out while I still have a chance for a large tax write off in 2006." I would never accuse anyone of not being 100% truthful, but selling before telling seems much savvier than telling before selling. Selling in 2005 would get you a 2005 tax year event - right?
