I rarely send anything via the PO either, but, as I try to look at the world from a larger perspective than just my own immediate needs, I don't mind the idea of government providing basic services that the private sector won't provide because it isn't profitable. Indeed, that's almost the definition of government. I don't see you carping about large subsidies to the coal industry. That, Sir, is governmental abuse of its powers.
