A buddy of mine recently bought a vacation home in Colorado. The home is off-grid with solar panels and batteries. The nearest electric pole is roughly mile away at the street. It would cost roughly $48k to have electricity service extended to the home. This is one example where it is actually more cost effective to go off grid. The only limitation are the batteries. A new set of batteries is $3,000 and they need replacing approximately every 8 - 12 years. Lead Acid battery technology had its drawbacks due to sulfation of the plates. I am hopeful Super Capacitors will one day replace traditional Lead Acid batteries and offer lighter weight, longer life, and eventually lower cost, imo.
