I first thought Pana restaurant servers just provided horrible slow service.
However, this time, we were in a cab and the cab driver was driving crazy and not thinking he spoke English, I made the comment about cab drivers are the only people in Panama that are in a hurry in anything lol.
He started laughing and said "that's because we're paid a straight fee and not by time."
I mentioned about the restaurants being slow and he said that Panamanians would be insulted if they were rushed. Servers always give them time to relax and converse with family before coming over to take their orders.
So our last visit to a sit down restaurant I tried to be more observant and I think he was right. I noticed none of the Panamanians appeared to be concerned about time or whether their server was taking a long time. They were chatting and laughing.
then I could immediately tell who the Americans were as they were sitting quietly staring at each other and looking at their watches and for their waiters.
Maybe the internet has caused us to become a bunch of zombies who can't communicate off line or something. I keep forgetting cultures are different and just assumed the service was just poor all over there. Instead they consider it poor service to rush people who came to enjoy a meal and spend time socializing.
