"they are educated far beyond their intelligence."

That makes absolutely no sense.

Most educated individuals are intelligent (some are exceptionally gifted...few are geniuses).

However, many intelligent people lack common sense.

Perhaps that's what you meant to say....

Your comment sounds more than a little elitist to me -- there are an awful lot of "educated" fools in this world and no place is more infested with them than our college campuses.

I have little or no regard for a person's "education". A stack of degrees does not demonstrate that a person is intelligent -- a degree only evidences an ability to regurgitate information that has been spoon fed to the person.

The term "educated" evidences no ability to discern that which is true from that which is false, which is surely a mark of an intelligent person. "Educated" also does not indicate whether the person has any ability to apply and use the information that he has been taught -- it takes intelligence to do those things. In the real world, away from the hallowed halls of academia, a degree is a door opener that tells a prospective employer that the person has possession of a box of mental tools. It remains to be seen if the candidate has the intelligence required to correctly use those tools in a productive manner that accomplishes goals.

Intelligence includes the ability to isolate and solve problems. I have known a good number of folks that have a degree, a number of degrees, even advanced degrees, but who at the same time have not one iota of intelligence -- thus the expression "educated far beyond their intelligence". I also know a lot of good folks (and some not so good) who do not have a degree (not "educated", as you call it) but who display a lot of intelligence.

Being "educated" is not an indicator of intelligence. Academia is chock full of folks who are supremely "educated" but who are total fools, lacking any sign of intelligence. If forced to venture outside of their insulated existence, they could not survive ten minutes. They are "educated" fools, and Krugman is a prime example.
