Gold soars to record high
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Gold futures gained Thursday, overcoming a weak start to soar past $1,440 an ounce, well on their way to setting a settlement record high as concerns about Libya and the Middle East joined worries about Portugal and Europe’s sovereign debt crisis.
Gold for April delivery /quotes/comstock/21e!f:gc\j11 (GCJ11 1,441, +2.90, +0.20%) rose $3.10, or 0.2%, to $1,441.10 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
A close around these levels would be a second consecutive record settlement for the metal, which ended the previous session at $1,438 an ounce.
