One of the more bizarre aspects of this (to me) is that initially the estimated death toll was sub one thousand. And even now is sub ten thousand. This is despite multiple towns with many 10's of thousands being utterly washed away. Either:
a) The Japanese are much better at evacuation than I would expect the west to be - essentially 90+ pct evac within 20-45 minutes.
OR
b) They can't look squarely at it - at least not publicly. And the western press doesn't know how to compensate for this.
