With all due respect, this may be because that is not the real story. It seems likely that Oracle was behind the development of Songbird, and once Allan decided to welsh on the payment due for their services, they had to develop alternative client software.
There are many good reasons. First of all, Microsoft is too savvy to buy a corporation that has an untold amount of judgment creditors hungry to be paid. Secondly, Microsoft retains world class legal counsel in addition to outstanding programmers. If they wanted in the music business they'd do it "their way", negotiate their own deals, and develop their own product, long before they would associate with a company that has essentially no goodwill or intrinsic value. In reality though, I think MS will be hesitant to re-enter the music business after the Zune fiasco.
