We do indeed know that lenny lied. he said that something was a dead, done deal. In fact, it was not a dead, done deal. It was not a deal at all. How can he explain that away? He was being held hostage? Maybe His wife was kidnapped and he had to sell shares to pay the ransom?

And lying does serve his purpose because his purpose is to sell shares. Getting caught in a lie doesn't serve his purpose, but it doesn't carry many consequences either.
