StoryCommentsEmail StoryPrintSize A A AReport Typo.Electric cars are edging closer to reality for Ontarians with the opening of a demonstration site and charging locations.

Economic Development and Trade Minister Sandra Pupatello said Thursday that she believes everyone is anxious to get their hands on one of these vehicles.

“It is becoming a reality,” she said. “At the same time gas prices are rising and people start looking at ... an alternative, we have (an electric car system) that is now burgeoning.”

The Greater Toronto area — with its frequent stops and starts in traffic — is deemed to be the ideal place to rev up the program in the province.

Better Place, a company which provides electric vehicle services, opened an electric car demonstration and education centre Thursday with $1 million in funding from the Ontario government.

“The general public will be able to access and see, touch and feel what it would be like to have an electric vehicle,” Pupatello said.

In addition to the demonstration project, there are two charge spots at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto that can support two electric vehicles each.

Around the GTA, charge spots can be found at PowerStream locations in Barrie, Markham and Vaughan; two at Veridian locations in Ajax and Bowmanville and three in the City of Toronto, including the Evergreen Brick Works site.

PowerStream and Veridian are local electricity distribution companies.

The province offers rebates of $5,000-$8,000 to purchasers of plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles, as well as green licence plates that allow the drivers to use carpool lanes even if they’re the only person in their vehicle.
