It's ridiculous. NIA started out on a great premise--that is, informing citizens of the impending dollar doom. But once they gained a following, they ended up becoming a shill for their own picks. Presumably their posse helps them to line their pockets in more ways than one.
I'm with you--it's in bad taste. Worse, they want a fortune for their picks. Not necessary! We can find them on our own.
If you ever get those touting e-mails and are interested in what they're picking, but repulsed by what they're asking for the info, check out stockgumshoe.com That guy is great at sleuthing the pick at no charge. Actually, I think he does want a modest fee for more in-depth stuff, but most of his stuff is free.
Often what he finds out is very revealing, too. Sometimes the touters pick very risky garbage and exaggerate the facts. Not saying that's what NIA is doing--their picks have been good. Including US Silver.
