Event Includes Awards Ceremony Honoring Community Members for Efforts on Behalf of Individuals with Special Needs

Phoenix, Ariz. (February 21, 2011) – Sponsored by MassMutual Financial Group and EP Global Communications, Disabilities Awareness Night recognizes local community leaders for their work and advocacy on behalf of the 54.6 million people living with disabilities in the United States.

Disabilities Awareness Night began in 2002 when Exceptional Parent magazine joined forces with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox to create this event, the first of its kind. The program encompasses both Major and Minor League Baseball venues, the NBA and NASCAR with events across the nation.

Disability Awareness Night events and sponsorship efforts have recently been integrated to the State of Arizona in 2010 under the leadership of Robert J. Smith, CLTC, Vice President/Special Care Planner of MassMutual Financial Group.

MassMutual Financial Group’s SpecialCare program is the exclusive national financial services sponsor of Disability Awareness Night. The SpecialCare program takes a team approach to help ensure proper life care planning for the future of a person with a disability and/or special need.

“The special needs community is often underrepresented and underserved, I am proud to take on the leadership role of advocating for individuals with disabilities,” says Robert J. Smith, CLTC, Vice President/Special Care Planner of MassMutual Financial Group, “The goal of Disability Awareness Night is to raise awareness through advocacy by honoring individuals with disabilities, families and caretakers for their dedication and extraordinary community achievements.”

Mr. Robert J. Smith is a prominent, 10 year veteran of MassMutual Financial Group and a dynamic longstanding Valley philanthropist. An active member of Phoenix 20/30 Club, Mr. Smith volunteers with the Children in Need Foundation of Arizona and has raised funds for such charities and organizations as the Valley of the Sun Boys and Girls Club, The Blake Foundation of Tucson, Autism Speaks, Crisis Nursery, Easter Seals, and Southwest Human Development to name of few.

As one of only two certified Special Care Planners in the state of Arizona, Mr. Smith utilizes a customized planning technique specifically for caretakers, families and loved ones that care for individuals with disabilities. The technique coined the Life Care Plan is a coordinated program of social, medical, financial and legal strategies for people with disabilities and their families that helps enable that person to obtain the best quality of life possible.
